CHAPTER TEN

SEATED IN THE WAITING room with Nick D’Angelo, David had to admit he was scared.

Halfway through the flight to the hospital Gran had suddenly begun to breathe heavier, and her skin had gone shiny with perspiration. With one quick look in David’s direction, Nick had radioed that additional information to the hospital.

Had she had a heart attack? The new valve she’d gotten last year wouldn’t do a bit of good if what was left of her old heart had decided not to cooperate.

David’s stomach was doing acrobatics. He felt a helpless, futile rage rising within him and bore down on it resolutely.

Where was that damned doctor? What was taking him so long?

His eyes sought the double doors every time they spilled someone new into the room. The place was busy in spite of the late hour, but he hardly registered that there were others present.

Then the doctor came through the swinging doors. David and Nick rose and met him before he got halfway across the room.

“We’re going to admit her,” Dr. Nolan said without preamble. “The arm is broken, but it’s a clean break. I’m more concerned about other things.”

David nodded grimly. “Is it her heart?”

“Mr. McKay, your grandmother didn’t have a heart attack. She had what we’d consider an anxiety attack. But just to be sure, I’d like to keep her for a few days and run tests.”

David expelled a sigh of relief.

“However, I’m afraid there’s a bit of a problem,” Dr. Nolan went on. “Geneva is insisting on being discharged, and we can’t keep her against her will. She doesn’t even want to wait until the morning.”

“She’s not going anywhere,” David said.

“Her anxiety level is still very high. We’ve done everything we can to calm her, but she’s quite worked up about having left your guide alone at some campground.”

“I’ll talk to her.”

Dr. Nolan smiled. “I was hoping you could reassure her. Geneva is one of my favorite patients, and I’d like to put her mind at ease.”

It was morning by the time the medication his grandmother had been given wore off. David had been forced to get pretty stern with her about being discharged, but once the doctor had given her a sedative, that had put an end to it. He’d spent most of the hours before dawn seated beside her bed, listening to the rhythmic hiss and beep of hospital equipment.

Aware of movement from the bed, he turned his head to find Gran’s clear blue gaze fixed on him. She seemed alert, and he thought the smile she gave him was one of the sweetest things he’d ever seen.

He flicked a quick glance toward her heart monitor.

“It’s not my heart,” she said in sulky displeasure. “I think I know enough now to tell when I’m fit as a May morning and when I’m not.” She made a restless movement. “I have to get out of here.”

He pushed her gently back down. “Gran, take it easy—”

“I won’t,” she said with a mutinous shake of her head. “We’ve left things in a muddle back there and we’ve got to go back.
